Sorcerer’s Apprentice (NOW SHOWING)
Reviewed by D Sonia Kaur Kairon

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Alfred Molina

In this much awaited film; Jay Baruchel plays Dave Stutler, chosen apprentice of the Sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Cage). Much is on the reluctant student’s shoulders as Dave studies the art of science and magic and joins Balthazar in his quest to defeat the evil Maxim Horvath (Molina). Can he battle the malevolent forces and win the heart of his childhood love?

This movie showcases one of the typical good-versus-bad battles. Clichés are inevitable. Don’t expect the Harry Potter standards regarding magic: the magical scenes are rather subtle.

The Last Airbender (NOW SHOWING)
Previewed by Joreen Chua.

Starring: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone

With the popularity of the anime, it is inevitable that a film would pop up sooner or later.

Based on the well-liked Nickelodeon animation, The Last Airbender features Aang, who is, well, the last airbender. In a magical world where people can manipulate the elemental forces, there are four major factions: Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. The quiet peace is disrupted when the Fire Nation rises up and launches a brutal war against the others. Waterbender Katara (Peltz) and her brother Sokka (Rathbone), discovers Aang (Ringer) the Chosen One, and the only one who can control all four elements and is fated to unite the nations.

A story that surrounds the theme of war and friendship, this 3D film may be a bit of a challenge for those who have not watched the anime to comprehend.
